  • How to Set Up Your Portable Gas Stove in 5 Easy Steps

New to portable gas cooking? Here's everything you need to get set up safely on your first trip.

The campsite is booked, the van is packed, and your ingredients are ready. But it's your first time with a portable gas stove — and you're not quite sure how the canister connects, or what to do if something feels off. That uncertainty is normal. And it's gone after step one.

The Problem With Most First-Time Set-Ups

Most people run into the same three issues when setting up a portable gas stove for the first time in NZ:

    • Wrong canister type. Not all butane canisters are the same. Using an incompatible canister is the most common cause of connection problems — and a safety risk.
    • No click, no confidence. If the canister doesn't lock in properly, the stove won't ignite cleanly. Many people second-guess themselves and keep fiddling, which causes more problems.
    • Poor placement. Setting the stove on an uneven or enclosed surface — common in van builds — leads to unstable cooking and inadequate ventilation.

None of these are complicated to fix. You just need to know what you're doing before you start.

    The Qube Makes It Simple

The Portable Gas Stove — Qube is designed for exactly this situation. It uses a push-and-lock canister system with piezoelectric ignition — no lighter required, no tools, no guesswork. Set it up once and you'll have it down for every trip after that.

5 Steps to Set Up Your Portable Gas Stove

Step 1 — Place it on a flat, stable surface Set the Qube on a level camp table, van shelf, or solid ground. Keep it clear of curtains, dry grass, and enclosed spaces. The 28 x 21 x 8.5 cm footprint fits neatly on most van boot shelves.

Step 2 — Check your butane canister The Qube runs on a standard butane canister (>95% butane, BDP-250-A spec). Before connecting, confirm there are no dents, the valve is clean and dry, and the canister hasn't been sitting in direct sun.

Step 3 — Attach the canister Determine the position of the internal latch on the stove. Face the notch on the gas cylinder upward, align it with the latch, and push firmly until you hear two distinct "ka-ka" clicks. That sound means it's locked and sealed correctly. If it doesn't click, remove and try again — do not force it.

Step 4 — Ignite Rotate the control knob counterclockwise and hold for one second. The piezoelectric igniter will fire automatically. You'll hear a normal flame establish — that's your confirmation the set-up is successful. Start on a low flame, then adjust to your cooking level. The Qube runs at 2300W burning power and a rated gas consumption of 168g/h — plenty of power for a full meal on a cold Aotearoa morning.

Step 5 — Shut down properly Turn the knob fully to the off position. Let the stove cool for a few minutes. Press the release to detach the canister, store it upright in a cool, dry place. Never store the stove with the canister attached for extended periods.

    Quick Safety Reminders
    • Always cook in a ventilated space — never in a fully enclosed van
    • If you smell gas before ignition, turn the knob off immediately and ventilate
    • Check the canister connection before every single use
    • Keep children away from the stove during operation
    • Only use the manufacturer-specified canister type (BDP-250-A)

Ready to Cook. Anywhere in Aotearoa.

Compact enough for any van build.

The Right Stove, Ready in Under a Minute

A portable gas stove is one of the most practical pieces of kit in any NZ van build or camping set-up. The Qube is compact enough to store, powerful enough to cook a proper meal, and straightforward enough for anyone to use safely from day one.
